SEC basketball fans may have felt they watched the same game 3 times on Wednesday night. In 3 thrilling outcomes, the team that trailed most of the game took the lead in the final seconds and held on for the win.
The Wednesday slate of Florida-South Carolina, Georgia-Arkansas and Texas A&M-Ole Miss delivered one of the wildest nights of SEC basketball ever. Florida, Arkansas and Texas A&M all pulled off improbable comebacks, combining for less than 1 minute of lead time. South Carolina’s collapse came latest into the game of the three. ESPN Analytics gave the Gamecocks a 92.6% chance to win when they went up 52-38 with 12:46 remaining in the second half. South Carolina turned it over 12 times in the 2nd half, including 9 times in the final 9 minutes.
Georgia was the only road team of the bunch to see its double-digit lead disappear. UGA had the largest collapse of the 3, leading by 15 points with 15:24 to go. In the 2nd half, Mike White’s team did not make a 3-point basket. John Calipari’s squad took advantage of 25 free-throw opportunities, making 22, while Georgia was 11-of-16 at the line over the final 20 minutes.
Ole Miss’s largest lead was just 11 points, a 29-18 advantage with 17:02 to go in the 2nd half. Texas A&M stayed in it, and the Rebels went cold at the wrong time. Over the final 3:49, Ole Miss missed its last 4 field-goal attempts. Texas A&M was 3-for-3 in the comeback win.
