Tuesday was the opening day for practices for the Reese’s Senior Bowl, and the South team, featuring 24 SEC players, took the field in the early afternoon in front of a horde of NFL scouts and other personnel.
It was, as always, a chaotic scene, but a few players managed to stand out. Let’s look at what folks on hand in Birmingham had to say about the session:
NEWS AND NOTES
One of the players getting a lot of pre-workout buzz was Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott. Prescott, in an interview with Texans TV, was excited about the opportunity to impress his potential future employers.
“I’m going to go out and I’m going to lead, just be natural and, just like I said, take my reps from under center,” he said. “I’m athletic enough that I’ll be fine doing it and just have a great time here and just enjoy this experience and opportunity.”
He drews raves after his first day of drills:
Dak Prescott looked fluid and athletic moving through his drops. Ball looked good out of his hands; compact release, tight spiral.

Dak Prescott’s mechanics (footwork especially) look so much better in 2015 than they did in 2014. That’s encouraging. #NFLDraft

Here are a few other tidbits from the first day of practice:
Eric Galko, owner of Optimum Scouting and Sporting News contributor, cited LSU CB Jalen Mills and Arkansas QB Brandon Allen as practice “winners” and called Arkansas’ Jonathan Williams “the best looking RB so far.” He was less impressed with Alabama QB Jake Coker, calling him “mechanical” and not “fluid.”
Chicago Bears’ writer Arthur Arkush singled out Alabama’s Jarran Reed and LSU’s Deion Jones for their solid work during practice drills. James Kratch, a Giants’ beat writer, reported that Reed had a meeting with the team.
First Coast News suggested Jaguars’ fans keep an eye on several SEC players, including LSU’s Jalen Mills, Georgia’s Jordan Jenkins and Alabama’s Reggie Ragland. Jenkins apparently fared well in a number of one-on-one drills.
Everyone was weighed and measured before practice on Tuesday. Here are the heights and weights for the SEC players.
ESPN’s Matt Bowen was impressed by Ragland, Mills and LSU’s Deion Jones.
Missouri’s Connor McGovern injured a hamstring, leaving his Senior Bowl very much in doubt.
South Carolina’s Jerrell Adams had smaller hands than some scouts hoped, but is still seen as an intriguing prospect because of his size (6-5, 244).
