Ahead of South Carolina’s season opener against North Carolina, Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer had high praise for Tar Heels head coach Mack Brown.

Beamer and Brown go way back, Beamer explained. The two met when Beamer’s father was still coaching, and Beamer even saw Brown get inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Beamer detailed his relationship with Brown and how the two have grown closer over the years during the SEC coaches teleconference on Wednesday.

“I’ve got a ton of respect for Coach Brown. The relationship with him really started with my parents and my dad’s relationship with Coach Brown going all the way back to 1987, my dad’s first season at Virginia Tech and Coach Brown was the head coach at Tulane and Virginia Tech and Tulane played each other. Then what Coach Brown did at North Carolina and then at Texas, and now what he’s doing at North Carolina, someone that my dad had a lot of respect for, has a lot of respect for. Someone that’s been very good to me in my career. My dad and Coach Brown both went into the College Football Hall of Fame the same year, the same night up in New York City. So it was pretty cool to be there for that, share that moment with both of them. Then he’s just been someone that this profession’s not easy because we’re all competing but he’s one of the few coaches that I’ve picked up the phone multiple times and called just getting his opinion on something, or advice or a question whatever it might be and he’s been very willing to share with me and help me. I’ve got a lot of respect for he and his program and the way that they do things on and off the field. I know that they’re going to do it the right way and the career that he’s had, just consistent success, year in, year out, he’s someone I really admire.”

The Gamecocks and Tar Heels face off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
