Shane Beamer shares impressive anecdote about Spencer Rattler’s leadership
Shane Beamer had high praise for Spencer Rattler and “his unselfishness,” even with South Carolina coming off a tough loss to Missouri this past weekend.
At his press conference on Tuesday, Beamer said he got on the team plane after Saturday’s game and sat on the aisle “not feeling good about myself or anything.”
Rattler walked by Beamer, stopped, put his hand on the coach’s shoulder and apologized to him that they “weren’t able to get it done” against No. 20 Mizzou, Beamer recalling the conversation with Rattler.
“I’m like, ‘Bro, I should be apologizing to you. You’re the one who just got beat up out there and I didn’t coach well enough for you,'” Beamer said to Rattler. “It’s not fake, that’s how he is and it’s the way he’s always has been and couldn’t be prouder of him and there’s not another quarterback in the country I’d rather have than him leading this team.”
Rattler completed 23-of-40 passes for 217 yards against the Tigers, but also threw an interception. So far this season, the senior QB had a 70.8 completion percentage, a 152.1 QB rating, 1,941 passing yards, 11 TDs and 5 interceptions.
Beamer said Rattler “couldn’t be better” and is “amazing” for bouncing back quickly after his match up against Mizzou.
“He got the crap beat out of him on Saturday, never complained, never once came over there,” Beamer said. “(Rattler) was continuing to lift up his teammates, was continually trying to pick up the freshmen. Was in there battling until the very end. I feel for him because I talk about these seniors that come back, same thing with him. He came back, he’s playing his butt off right now.
Beamer noted that Rattler didn’t expect the Gamecocks to be 2-5, and wasn’t expecting to have the injuries that the team has had on the offense line.
“But his energy at practice, his demeanor within the team, be like Spencer in how he is handling his teammates,” Beamer said.
The rest of the season and beyond, Beamer said Rattler has a “great future.”
“There’s still some great moments coming for him as a quarterback,” Beamer said.
South Carolina takes on Texas A&M (4-3) at noon Saturday on ESPN.
