Shedeur Sanders had to sit through the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft without hearing his name called, and then surprisingly made it through the entirety of the second round without getting a call from an NFL franchise.

He did get a phone call. It just wasn’t from an actual NFL team.

While live-streaming the family’s watch party on Friday night, Sanders was pranked by someone pretending to be from an NFL organization. The person told Sanders he would “have to wait a little longer” to be drafted.

Sanders was one of the biggest stories of the opening round of this year’s NFL Draft on Thursday night. He was widely regarded as the No. 2 quarterback in the draft class and linked to the New York Giants, the New Orleans Saints, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Giants and Saints both selected different quarterbacks. The Steelers used their first-round pick on a defensive tackle and picked a running back in the third round.

After 90 selections, Sanders was still on the board. While some fans seemed to revel in his drop out of the first round on Thursday night, the slide out of the second round evoked plenty of sympathy toward the Sanders family.

Sanders, to his credit, has handled the disappointment with grace.

“We all didn’t expect this, of course,” Sanders told family and friends at a draft party on Thursday night. “But I feel like with God, anything’s possible — everything’s possible. … We all know this shouldn’t have happened. But we understand, we’re on to bigger and better things. Tomorrow’s the day. We’re going to be happy regardless.”
