Smoke Monday ejected after controversial targeting call

Smoke Monday is a key player in the secondary for the Auburn Tigers. Now, he’ll miss the rest of the game on Saturday afternoon against Georgia.

Why? He was called for a targeting penalty against Georgia QB Stetson Bennett IV during the second quarter of Saturday’s contest.

You can see the somewhat controversial call below. Upon review, it was confirmed as targeting:

When the quarterback is running, he is no longer afforded the same protections he is when he’s in the pocket. Still, Monday made helmet-to-helmet contact with the crown of his helmet hitting Bennett’s.

How will that impact the rest of the game? We’ll find out over the next 2.5 quarters, but it’s definitely a big loss for the Auburn defense.
