The University of South Carolina lost one of its greats on Friday.
Max Runager, a punter who can make a serious case for the school’s best ever, was found dead inside his car in a parking lot at Edisto Memorial Gardens on Friday. According to a report from The State, no foul play is suspected in the shocking incident.
Runager was just 61 years old, and he is survived by both his parents, Geb and Nancy Runager, and his three sons, Kolby, Kramer, and Tyler.
Runager currently ranks fourth all-time at USC with an average of 41.1 yards per punt. His services as a three-year starter for the Gamecocks, culminating with being named team captain in 1978, earned him many school and conference honors. He was a 2007 inductee into the S.C. Athletic Hall of Fame, a 2013 inductee into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame and an SEC Football Legends pick that same year.
After his four-year career at USC, Runager gained notoriety in the NFL — most notably with the dominant San Francisco 49ers teams of the 80s, where he won two Super Bowl championships in 1984 and 1988.
