South Carolina is 1 of the hottest teams in college football, and Gamecocks fans were hoping that might be enough to put them in the College Football Playoff. However, that didn’t end up being the case.
Shane Beamer’s squad will be heading to Orlando to take on Illinois in the Cheez It Citrus Bowl.

Beamer has been doing his best over the past couple of weeks to tell the media and College Football Playoff committee that his team deserved to be in the playoffs.
While he may be disappointed they won’t be playing for a championship, Beamer posted a message on social media showing how excited he is for his team’s opportunity.
Just got asked for a statement about this opportunity- Here’s my statement :… https://t.co/7IgF47n2RD

He posted a ton of exclamation points, as well as a couple emojis that indicate he is more than excited to be playing in the Citrus Bowl. The Gamecocks are playing as well as any team in the country, as they have won their last 6 games.
The Citrus Bowl had its pick of any SEC team that didn’t make the CFP, and decided to go with South Carolina. That means it could have taken Alabama or Ole Miss, but thought Beamer’s team would be the perfect fit.
The Gamecocks will take on an Illinois team that also won 9 games, and has gotten better each year under former SEC coach Brett Bielema.
The game will be on New Year’s Eve and kickoff will be at 3 p.m. ET on ABC.
