South Carolina got off to a slow start on offense in the Duke’s Mayo Classic against the North Carolina Tar Heels.
The Gamecocks struggled mightily in the 1st quarter, mustering just 73 total yards of offense. The rushing offense was particularly anemic in the 1st, averaging just 0.8 yards per attempt. The Gamecocks ended the 1st with just 4 yards on the ground.
The Gamecocks’ rushing attack continued to struggle in the 2nd quarter. At halftime, the team still had just 5 yards on the ground. Interestingly, the team’s 2 touchdowns both came on the ground. Dakereon Joyner has 7 attempts for 7 yards and 1 TD while Juju McDowell has 2 attempts for 1 yard with 1 TD.
Luckily, the passing attack has fared far better. Spencer Rattler has completed all 10 of his pass attempts for 159 passing yards. Xavier Legette is the leading receiver with 3 catches for 82 yards.
The Tar Heels, meanwhile, have had much more success on the ground. British Brooks has 6 carries for 33 yards and Drake Maye has rushed 4 times for 25 yards.
The Tar Heels entered the half with a 17-14 lead over the Gamecocks. South Carolina will have to get the rushing attack going in the 2nd half to stay in this game.
