South Carolina will retain Shawn Elliott after all.

The offensive line coach who became the interim when Steve Spurrier abruptly resigned did not do enough to win the job permanently, but will remain on Will Muschamp’s staff.

Elliott drew attention for his impassioned pregame speeches and emotions before, during and after games, something with which Muschamp is familiar. He’ll remain as the team’s offensive line coach, will be a key recruiter and will help provide some continuity with the Gamecocks staff.

Muschamp also has hired Alabama assistant strength and conditioning coach Jeff Dillman, who worked as his head strength coach at the University of Florida.

South Carolina’s current staff includes:

  • Kurt Roper, offensive coordinator
  • Travaris Robinson, defensive coordinator
  • Bobby Bentley, running backs coach
  • Shawn Elliott, offensive line
  • Ellis Johnson, unspecified defensive role
  • Jeff Dillman, strength and conditioning

Muschamp said during his introductory press conference that he prioritizes his play-caller, defensive coordinator and offensive line coach, all positions that he’s filled. Beyond that, Muschamp said, you’d better be able to recruit if you want a spot on his staff.
