South Carolina needs to turn things around against Mississippi State after a 1-2 start, and Gamecocks senior quarterback Spencer Rattler sees a way forward.
“Every game in the SEC is challenging, honestly, so we’re going to prepare the same way,” Rattler told the media on Tuesday. “We had a great week last week preparing. We’re going to have another great week this week and go out there on Saturday and hopefully set a tone and get back on track.”
South Carolina hasn’t looked on track this season with the exception of a 47-21 win over an FCS opponent, Furman. The Gamecocks blew first-half leads of North Carolina and Georgia in a pair of losses.
“We did a lot of great things offensively. Left some stuff on the field,” Rattler said about the loss to Georgia. “It was exactly what we thought it was postgame — shot ourselves in the foot. It stings, but it’s in the past now.”
Rattler will need to avoid sacks and complete longer throws against MSU. He endured 12 sacks against UNC and Georgia combined, and he threw for fewer than 10 yards per completion in both losses.
If Rattler can’t move the chains with the passing game, he wants to see more from the running game. The Gamecocks have 2 running backs, Mario Anderson and DJay Braswell, who average 4.3 yards or better per carry.
“If we could get that going, have a good balance, we’ll be good,” Rattler said.
