Mississippi State endured a shocking 21-20 loss at home to South Alabama in the season opener.

Perhaps suffering some residual impact, Dan Mullen’s program also lost a verbal commitment on Thursday evening.

J.J. Russell — an in-state linebacker from Grenada, Miss. — reneged on his Mississippi State pledge via Twitter. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound outside linebacker initially committed to the Bulldogs on June 18.

However, Russell opted to look elsewhere as he searches for his perfect collegiate fit. He pledged to MSU over offers from the likes of Cal, Louisville, and Mizzou — as well as interest from Ole Miss.
