Steve Spurrier may have broken the hearts of some South Carolina fans with the timing of his departure this season, but it is gestures like the one that he reportedly made recently that should be able to mend hurt feelings sooner rather than later.
The State newspaper’s Gerry Melendez is reporting that Spurrier donated the final paycheck that he received from South Carolina, which is believed to be for more than $70,000, to the Gamecock Club.
Melendez writes that Spurrier was paid the remainder of his contract following a midseason resignation, with the Head Ball Coach receiving roughly $1 million. Roughly $225,000 of that is believed to have come from public funds, with Under Armour and IMG reportedly paying the bulk of the money left on the deal.
Of course, that option was much cheaper for the university than any sort of buyout that would have been incurred by removing the 70-year-old from his post for the poor performance of last season’s Gamecocks team.
