Steve Spurrier’s reaction to Florida’s SEC struggles will have Gator fans missing the Fun ‘n’ Gun glory days

Steve Spurrier will forever be associated with the Florida football glory days. The Head Ball Coach could not help but think of the SEC success of UF’s Fun N’ Gun heyday when he was told just how bad things have been for the orange and blue since the 2020 season unraveled.

Following Florida’s 45-35 home loss to LSU, the Gators are now just 3-11 in their last 14 SEC games. Only Vanderbilt has performed worse in SEC play during that stretch.

It goes back to December 2020 when Florida had the stunning “Shoe Game” upset loss to LSU ahead of the SEC Championship, which the Gators lost to Alabama. In 2021, Florida went 2-6 in conference play, leading to Dan Mullen’s dismissal. In Billy Napier’s first season, the Gators are 1-3 in conference play with remaining games against Georgia, Texas A&M, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.

Spurrier only lost 14 SEC games in his 12 seasons at UF (1990-2001). Speaking with long-time Florida columnist Pat Dooley, Spurrier estimated that he was likely in his 10th or 11th season when he picked up conference loss No. 11.

Spurrier remains close to Florida football as an ambassador for the athletic department.
