Steve Wilks, a former Carolina Panthers interim coach and Missouri defensive coordinator, has landed a new job in the NFL.
Wilks, who put himself in a solid position to land the permanent job with the Panthers after a successful run following Matt Rhule’s firing, will be the new San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator. The news came from Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.
Wilks, who went 6-6 last season, was Mizzou’s defensive coordinator in 2021, and left to become Carolina’s defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach.
When Wilks was hired at Mizzou, he was the first 7-figure assistant coach in Mizzou history. Wilks agreed to a two-year contract that was expected to pay him a guaranteed $2.4 million.
