Tennessee, Chase Burns use strong 5th inning to eliminate Stanford at CWS

Things didn’t start well for Tennessee baseball in Monday afternoon’s 6-4 win over Stanford.
The Vols were making contact on Cardinal ace Quinn Mathews early but couldn’t bring any baserunners home. Chase Dollander, on the other hand, had a bit of a shaky outing as the Vols fell behind 4-0 early.
All of Tennessee’s early bad luck turned in the 5th inning, however. Three straight singles loaded the bases with just one out when Hunter Ensley hit a sac fly to bring in the Vols’ first run of the game.

And just like that, the flood gates opened. Jared Dickey and Christian Moore brought home 3 runs of their own following a pair of incredible at-bats, especially from Dickey.
But it was Moore’s single to center field that tied things up and brought the Vols back from the dead.

Zane Denton gave Tennessee the lead in the 7th inning with an RBI groundout and Blake Burke added some insurance a little later following a wild pitch, making it 6-4.
It would be a disservice to talk about Monday’s huge win for Tennessee without mentioning a truly herculean effort by Chase Burns in relief. He threw over 70 pitches and struck out 9 Stanford batters to ensure Tennessee’s first CWS win under head coach Tony Vitello.
The Vols will now face the loser of LSU-Wake Forest in another elimination game.
