Tennessee ended its season in a loss to Ohio State in round 1 of the College Football Playoff, ending what was a very good season under coach Josh Heupel.
However, it has been a tough week since, as the team has lost some guys who could have been major contributors on next season’s team. The latest player to announce he is leaving Knoxville is wide receiver Mike Matthews, as the former 5-star announced he would be entering the transfer portal.
This is the 2nd time the Volunteers have a lost a wide receiver in the last couple of days, as Squirrel White also announced he was entering the portal. Star running back Dylan Sampson also announced he was going to the NFL, leaving the Volunteers with some key losses on the offensive side of the ball.
Matthews didn’t put up big numbers in his lone season at Tennessee, but he was becoming more involved in the offense at the end of the season.
He finished with 7 catches for 90 yards and 2 touchdowns. In the regular season finale against Vanderbilt, he finished with 3 catches for 39 yards and 1 touchdown.
Matthews was a big-time prospect coming out of high school, as he was the No. 24 overall prospect in the 2024 class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He was also the No. 4 player in the state of Georgia, as well as the No. 6 wide receiver.
