Texas A&M blows 9th-inning lead, drops series finale to Cal Poly for 1st loss of 2025

Texas A&M, the No. 1-ranked team in the most referenced college baseball polls, suffered its first loss of the 2025 season on Sunday in heartbreaking. The Aggies took a shutout into the 9th inning but came out on the wrong side of a 3-2 ballgame.
Clayton Freshcorn entered the game for the Aggies in the 9th, and things did not go as planned. After allowing a leadoff single, he gave up a 2-run home run to Collins, tying the ballgame.
After the home, Cal Poly had its next batter, Murray, reach on a fielding error. He was bunted over to second and advanced to 3rd base on a wild pitch. Murray came around to score on a grounder, beating the throw home to make it a 3-2 game. The final tally for the decisive top of the 9th inning was 3 runs on 2 hits with 1 error.
In the bottom of the 9th, the Aggies went 3 up, 3 down. Tanner Sagouspe secured the victory by retiring Texas A&M batters in order on a pair of ground outs that bookended a fly out to left-center field.
Cal Poly’s rally spoiled a stellar outing for Myles Patton. The A&M hurler tossed 7 shutout innings, striking out 8 in a no decision.
Cal Poly came to College Station with a 1-3 record but could have easily won the series against No. 1 Texas A&M. The Aggies trailed 2-1 after the 7th inning stretch in Saturday’s game. Texas A&M scored 3 in the bottom of the 7th and won that game 4-3 to clinch the series after a 6-1 victory Friday.
Up next, Texas A&M hosts Texas State on Tuesday.
