South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp appears to be doing his best to avoid repeating the mistakes that got him fired from his first head coaching job at Florida, namely securing a number of talented quarterbacks for the Gamecocks’ roster.

After signing two of the most hyped quarterbacks in program history (Brandon McIlwain and Jake Bentley) since Muschamp’s hiring in December, the Gamecocks have added to their quarterback bounty with the commit of 2017 quarterback recruit Jay Urich.

The 6-foot-4, 198-pound Urich announced the news via his Twitter account Friday:

Urich is rated as a three-star prospect and the No. 28 dual-threat quarterback prospect in the nation, according to 247Sports Composite Ratings. A native of Piedmont, South Carolina, Urich chose the Gamecocks over Duke, Harvard, Georgia Southern and Jacksonville State among others.

Urich fits the mold of a quarterback Muschamp and his offensive coordinator Kurt Roper have indicated they want going forward, a passer that can be developed into an accurate thrower and while at the same time possessing the running ability to threaten a defense.

The Gamecocks now have nine commitments lined up for their 2017 recruiting class, all of which are currently rated as three-star prospects entering their senior year of high school.
