Cycle after cycle, the number of prospects with three-star rankings from the recruiting industry increases. Therefore, it’s not a surprise that many of these prospects end up being outstanding players at the next level.
Below are five players who were rated three stars as prospects who earned All-Southeastern Conference honors (Associated Press) for the 2015 season. It’s interesting that three are offensive linemen and one is a quarterback- those are both considered the most “developmental” of all of the positions and among the most difficult to evaluate.
Dak Prescott, QB, Mississippi State
Prescott was a record-setting quarterback and a Heisman Trophy candidate for the Bulldogs and he led Mississippi State to 19 wins during the past two seasons. He was rated 0.8569 (mid three star) by the recruiting industry out of Haughton (La.) High in the Class of 2011. He was a first-team All-SEC selection (AP) this past season.
Pharoh Cooper, WR, South Carolina
Cooper was a high school quarterback who was recruited by the Gamecocks to be a cornerback. Cooper proceeded to earn All-SEC honors as a sophomore and junior before declaring for the NFL Draft after this season. Cooper was rated 0.8730 (high three star) by the recruiting industry out of Havelock (N.C.) High in the 2013 cycle. He was a first-team All-SEC selection (AP) this past season.
Sebastian Tretola, OG, Arkansas
Tretola signed with Nevada out of high school before transferring to Iowa Western Community College where he earned a rating of 0.8660 (mid three-star) by the recruiting industry in the 2014 cycle. Tretola was a first-team All-SEC selection (AP) this past season.
Kyler Kerbyson, OT, Tennessee
Kerbyson, who rated 0.8839 (high three-star) during the 2011 cycle out of Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic, was a high school tight end who developed into one of the Volunteers top offensive linemen. He was one of two Tennessee offensive linemen that earned second-team All-SEC honors (AP) this past season.
Dylan Wiesman, C, Tennessee
Wiesman was the second Volunteers offensive trenchman to earn All-SEC honors (AP) this past season. Out of Colerain High in Cincinnati in the 2013 cycle, Wiesman rated 0.8352 (low three-star) numerically.
Note: A pair of second team All-SEC selections (AP) — wide receiver Drew Morgan of Arkansas and tight end Jake McGee of Florida — were rated two-star prospects coming out of high school.
