Time for Josh Dobbs’ NFL debut? Former Tennessee QB practices with starters at Steelers practice

Josh Dobbs has yet to take a snap during an NFL regular-season game. But that could change this week.
With Ben Roethlisberger sidelined with an elbow injury, Dobbs practiced with the first team at Pittsburgh Steelers practice on Thursday, according to Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Roethlisberger typically sits out Wednesday practices, according to Adamski, but it’s rare for him not to practice on Thursday, unless it’s a legitimate injury. He sustained the elbow injury late in overtime of the Steelers’ season-opening tie with the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
Dobbs became Pittsburgh’s No. 2 quarterback when Landry Jones was released late in the preseason.
“I know that if my opportunity comes and my number is called to be ready to go in and play, and play to win and compete at the highest level,” Dobbs said after Thursday’s practice, per Adamski. “If I’m on the sideline again, I’ll be helping Ben seeing as much as I can see and help him as much as I can. It’s a two-way street, so you have to be ready for both situations.”
Dobbs was selected by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He played at Tennessee from 2013-16. Then, he was Pittsburgh’s third-string quarterback behind Roethlisberger and Jones in 2017.
The Steelers play their home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
