College football is in a state of chaos right now.

Former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright has the chance to be the first-ever player to play in the preseason and still suit up for a college roster. Wright is able to play a 5th season in college football after he and several other players were granted a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the NCAA from an eligibility case in Louisiana.

The Browns TE entered the transfer portal on Thursday and, if he’s cut by Cleveland as is expected, is eligible to sign with a team for the 2026 CFB season.

Wright dressed but did not play for the Browns on Saturday during Cleveland’s preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills. Following the game, Browns head coach Todd Monken was asked about Wright and his current status.

โ€œIsn’t this shit crazy? I don’t even know what to say,” Monken answered. “As far as I know, he’s had a medical issue that wasn’t allowing him to practice. โ€ฆ I wondered why Lane Kiffin reached out a week ago. Now I know. I didnโ€™t call him back. Now I guess I should have.โ€

Wright played 2 seasons at Virginia Tech and 2 seasons at Ole Miss before entering the 2026 NFL Draft. He went undrafted and was claimed by the Philadelphia Eagles but eventually made his way to Cleveland for the preseason.

The deadline for NFL teams to cut their rosters to 53 players is 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 30.
