Somehow, hats became a staple of National Signing Day announcements.

There’s a cavalcade of high school assemblies replete with a long table, a microphone, a nervous teenager, beaming family members — and a row of college hats. The player grabs one of them, puts it on his head and declares a team.

That won’t be how Mecole Hardman Jr. makes his announcement next week.

The five-star athlete, rated by the 247Sports composite as the No. 13 overall player in the 2016 class, hinted to Rivals.com that he’ll try to break the monotony of the day’s news.

The plan remains fluid, but Hardman Jr. may sit six cakes in front of him, potentially slicing up and eating the icing logo of the school he plans to attend.

“I think I am going to throw a school out on signing day,” Hardman Jr. said, according to Rivals.com.

“Like on that day I am going to throw a school out so I can have probably a set six. I don’t know what that school is going to be. I will probably make that decision soon. It will be proabably be hats or cakes. I don’t know what. However my momma wants to do it, we will do it like that.”

Hardman Jr.’s current top seven includes Ohio State, Florida, Clemson, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. The 247Sports Crystal Ball projects a 78 percent chance that he lands at home-state UGA, with the Tide and Vols trying to make up ground.
