During his original recruitment, Major Burns made the difficult decision to leave his hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to play for the Georgia Bulldogs.
But after one season in Athens, Burns decided that being at home sounded pretty good and he transferred to LSU. And, to this point, it appears as if it’s going to be a move that works out well for both parties.
Speaking to ESPN 104.5 Baton Rouge, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron heaped praise on what he’s seen from his 6-foot-3, 178-pound safety in terms of his performance on and off the field.
“He’s done (his job) every day he’s been here,” Orgeron said. “(LSU strength and conditioning coach) Tommy Moffitt came up to see me one day this summer and said, ‘Coach, Major Burns may be a starter for us the way he’s acting out there.’ He sure is playing like he knows it.”
Orgeron added that what he’s been most impressed with when it comes to Burns’ play is his intelligence and field awareness, and that type of ability from a safety can keep points off the scoreboard.
“That safety has to make plays in space,” Orgeron added. “A lot of times, he’s the last line of defense, and if (he) doesn’t, it’s a touchdown. He made 2 or 3 game-saving tackles already in practice. He’s smart, (and) he’s coming in here and competing.”
As a high school recruit, Burns was rated as a 4-star prospect by 247Sports. He was also ranked as the No. 182 overall player in the 2020 class and as the 7th-best prospect in Louisiana.
Burns played in just 6 games, mostly on special teams, at Georgia and recorded 5 tackles. He will have 4 years of eligibility remaining with the Tigers, who open their 2021 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 4, against UCLA.
