Trey Lance will have a new team ahead of the 2023 NFL season.
The San Francisco 49ers have traded the former first-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys for a mid-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The 49ers will get back a 4th round pick in the deal.

This is a shocking move as the Cowboys were not widely rumored to be a suitor for the QB. It appears that Lance will now backup Dak Prescott for at least this season.
Lance was selected with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The QB spent the majority of his rookie season backing up Jimmy Garoppolo. Lance did end up seeing action in six games as a rookie, starting in two. Going into the 2022 season, Lance was named the starting QB for the Niners. Unfortunately, Lance suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2.
Heading into the 2023 season, Lance was battling Brock Purdy for the top job. It was recently announced that not only did Lance not win the starting job, but he would be the third-string QB behind Purdy and Sam Darnold.
While it has been a disappointing start to his career, Lance is still just 23 years old. The former North Dakota State star should have plenty of opportunities left to prove himself.
