Troy Aikman rips UCLA and fans for poor showings on Saturday

UCLA is now 3-0, but its record isn’t exactly indicative of a team that is playing like it deserves to be undefeated. The Bruins narrowly defeated the South Alabama Jaguars, 32-31 in a game in which a team of their stature should have blown the opponent out.

ESPN’s Troy Aikman had some thoughts both on the team and on the poor fan turnout, which was reflected by a Rose Bowl that looked anything but filled. Really, that’s an understatement.

“This is an embarrassment but we couldn’t fill the Rose Bowl in 1988 when we were the #1 team in the country. Anyone else at UCLA think it’s time for an on-campus 30,000 seat stadium? Of course, if we can’t play better than we did today, it would be half-empty too.”

Aikman played for UCLA before going pro and won the Davey O’Brien Award there. It will be interesting to see if his former team proves worthy of national attention as it faces Colorado on Saturday, Sept. 24.
