Tua Tagovailoa’s No. 1 thing to improve on this season might not be what you expect

Players and coaches have grown to expect a preseason question about what they believe they can improve on in the upcoming season. Usually, their mind goes toward something on the field or a specific skill.
When Tua Tagovailoa got that question on Saturday during Alabama media day in Tuscaloosa, his answer was different than most.
“I think everyone has a lot of things they want to improve on, but I’d say for me, my biggest thing is working on my relationship with my teammates,” he said. “You know we have a lot of younger guys, and helping out a lot of the younger guys, getting to understand the plays, getting to understand how everything works around here. You know, getting them kind of going within our system. I think that’s going to help us better not only each other, but better ourselves as a team.”

It sounds like an aswer well beyond that of a sophomore who is going to battle for the starting quarterback job in fall camp. He could have given an answer about his throwing motion or the progression of his reads, but he decided to give an answer about the team and his teammates.
It begs the question whether Tagovailoa just paid attention to his media coaching, but it’s still not an answer most could have given on their feet.
The Crimson Tide ended the 2018 recruiting cycle with the No. 6 class in the country, according to 247Sports, with 11 4-star players and two 5-stars. While many will have to wait their turn and may not see the field until after Tagovailoa is gone, it’s still admirable that he wants to take them under his wing.
