After every weekend of games, you always hear about the performances of stars like Leonard Fournette and Myles Garrett. But there are also the performances you don’t hear as much about, coming from some under-the-radar SEC players — the sleepers.
Who were the best of the Saturday Sleepers from Week 6? Take a look.
DERRIUS GUICE, LSU
The Tigers compiled 396 rushing yards against South Carolina in Week 6 with freshman Derrius Guice leading all LSU running backs with 161. Heisman frontrunner and Tigers starter Leonard Fournette was not far behind with 158 rushing yards but didn’t play a snap in the fourth quarter. Both Guice and Fournette found the end zone once and Tigers sophomore runner Darrel Williams scored twice against the Gamecocks. But Guice also led all Tigers tailbacks with 10.1 yards per carry in this game.
DOMINIQUE REED, ARKANSAS
The Razorbacks showed good fight against the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa but still lost 27-14. But the score would have been a lot worse for Arkansas if quarterback Brandon Allen hadn’t connected with Dominique Reed on a late 54-yard touchdown pass. Reed doesn’t start for the Razorbacks, and didn’t have more than 33 receiving yards in a game before Week 6, but he led all Arkansas receivers against Alabama with 77 yards.
JALEN TABOR, FLORIDA
Missouri quarterback Drew Lock, who was filling in for the suspended Maty Mauk, threw 2 interceptions against Florida with sophomore cornerback Jalen Tabor taking one of the picks back for a 40-yard touchdown. Tabor was a big-time recruit out of Washington, D.C., and at 6-foot-1, 191 pounds, has ideal size for his position. He appears to be having a breakout year for the Gators and now has returned 2 interceptions for touchdowns this season.
DONALD GRAY, MISSISSIPPI STATE
Mississippi State only threw 15 passes against Troy but 3 of them resulted in touchdowns. Regular contributors at wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson and Fred Ross each hauled in touchdowns, but Donald Gray had his most productive day since Week 3 against Northwestern State when he caught 4 receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown. Against Troy, Gray finished with 2 receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown.
EUGENE BRAZLEY, OLE MISS
Ole Miss out-muscled another non-conference team with a lopsided 52-3 victory over New Mexico State, and sophomore Eugene Brazley led all Rebels runners with 98 yards and a touchdown on just 6 carries. The Rebels have struggled to find a consistent runner in their backfield this season, and perhaps this performance will get the explosive Brazely more touches moving forward.
REGGIE DAVIS, GEORGIA
Georgia suffered another disappointing loss to an SEC opponent, but wide receiver Reggie Davis did his best to help the Bulldogs win by scoring on offense and special teams. Davis took a punt 70 yards to the house in the second quarter against Tennessee, and later caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Greyson Lambert. However, the Volunteers got the best of the Bulldogs in Knoxville 38-31.
