Vanderbilt’s offensive depth chart has reportedly taken an unfortunate hit. The Commodores will be down a second-year player who had been expected to contribute this fall.

According to Robbie Weinstein of 247Sports, redshirt freshman TE Cole Spence tore his ACL this offseason.

Spence, from Roswell, Georgia, is listed at 6-7, 247 on the Commodores roster. The former Mount Pisgah Christian School standout was part of the 2022 recruiting class.

Last season, Spence played in just 4 games, primarily on special teams, to preserve his redshirt. This year, Spence was seen as 1 of Vanderbilt’s top 2 options at the position heading into fall camp, per Weinstein.

Returning TE Justin Ball looks to be VU’s starter at the tight end position entering his redshirt senior season. Last season, Ball played in all 12 games, recording 5 catches for 67 yards.

The Commodores open their 2023 campaign at home against Hawai’i on Aug. 26. It will be season 3 of Clark Lea’s tenure on the West End.
