Vanderbilt’s 5 impact players to watch vs. Florida

Vanderbilt, the SEC’s worst team, had a chance last week to help cement the SEC’s reputation as the best conference but was shut out by mid-major Houston 34-0, the Commodores’ worst loss of the season.

The task isn’t any easier Saturday. These five Commodores must play well against No. 11 Florida to avoid back-to-back blowout losses:

1. QB Johnny McCrary: The Commodores have been weaning off McCrary ever since a disastrous three interception game against South Carolina, but after Kyle Shurmur left the Houston game with an injury it appears that McCrary will remain the starter. McCrary threw just one touchdown pass but seven interceptions in October. Vandy needs a much better November.

2. DT Adam Butler: Nobody has caused more disruption than Butler, who has three sacks in his past three games. The problem is he only played two games in October as the talented junior has struggled to stay on the field. Look for Butler to continue to strong play as he gets back on the field against Florida.

3. WR Latevius Rayford: With three receptions for 37 yards last week, Rayford had more catches than the rest of the team combined against Houston. The Commodores will need more than five completions if they hope to end their scoring drought Saturday.

4. RB Ralph Webb: Webb rushed for 99 yards against Houston, but most impressive was the fact that his longest run was just 10 yards. With 52 carries and 198 yards in Vandy’s past two games, Webb is the best option. Florida knows that too.

5. LB Zach Cunningham: Florida RB Kelvin Taylor has 10 rushing TDs this season — three more than Vanderbilt. Cunningham and Co. know they will have their hands full, but run defense is one of the Commodores’ rare strengths. They’re fourth in the SEC, allowing 114 yards per game.
