During a tumultuous 3-9 season in 2015, the South Carolina pass rush was abysmal.
It ranked twelfth out of 14 SEC programs with only 20 sacks a year ago. The Gamecocks inability to get after opposing quarterbacks consistently was a massive problem. As such, it’s up to new defensive line coach Lance Thompson to galvanize the unit.
Lance Thompson: Hoping to have 10 guys to rely on along the front by Sept. 1. Will constantly rotate.

Speaking at practice Wednesday, Thompson echoed this sentiment.
“Without question, our defensive line, we’ve got to improve in every area. Number one is stopping the run but number two is effectively affecting the quarterback, whether it’s sacks or hurries or just getting him off the spot, getting him out of his rhythm.”
A starting unit has yet to be announced, although Thompson appears very bullish on one incoming freshman.
“D.J. Wonnum, for a true freshman, has the mind of a senior. He sees the game, he’s natural, he’s reactive. We’re all very encouraged and very happy with D.J. Wonnum,” said Thompson. “He has all the right intangibles. He’s really performed at a high level.”
Wonnum — a 6-foot-4, 240-pounder out of Stone Mountain, Ga. — likely will be given every opportunity to see the field this upcoming season.
