Is it possible South Carolina will trot out a true freshman to take the reins of the Gamecocks offense?
Based upon the early reviews of young signal-caller Brandon McIlwain, it’s appears to be a feasible assertion.
Incumbent starter Perry Orth was interviewed after practice on Wednesday afternoon. He spoke about the ongoing competition between himself and McIlwain. The duo have been splitting first-team reps throughout the early portion of camp. Fellow freshman Jake Bentley has been getting work as the third-team option — whilst former quarterback Lorenzo Nunez has made the full transition to wide receiver.
Without question, the play at the position needs to improve immensely if South Carolina is to make a bowl appearance in 2016. Orth has a definitely edge when it comes to experience, whereas McIlwain brings better arm strength, and a considerable advantage in athleticism to the table.
Perry Orth on Brandon McIlwain: "There were a few plays today where you just went, ‘Wow, that kid’s talented.’"

It will be quite fascinating to see how this race ultimately shakes out.
