Video: Referees miss huge facemask penalty, costing Mississippi State a touchdown

Though Mississippi State will likely cruise to a victory over FCS opponent Samford, an early missed call by the referees took a touchdown off the board.

MSU QB Nick Fitzgerald ran a QB draw on fourth down near the goal line. In the process of plunging into the end zone, Fitzgerald’s helmet was ripped off on an obvious facemask penalty by a Samford defender.

However, the officials ruled that, since Fitzgerald’s helmet came off at the one-yard line, the play was dead there and Samford took over on downs.

The video above speaks for itself. How did the refs miss that blatantly obvious call?

(For the record, Mississippi State only leads Samford 21-20 in the second quarter.)
