Southern’s Devon Gales suffered a serious spinal cord injury on a kickoff return late in the third quarter during Saturday’s game at Georgia.
Gales was attempting to make a block when he lowered his head and upon contact, fell motionless to the turf. Gales was carted off on a stretcher after several minutes surrounded by trainers without movement in his extremities.
SEC Network’s Laura Rutledge later reported that the wide receiver did have movement in his hands at a local area hospital.
Southern’s official statement:
Gales will remain under the care of the doctors at Athens Regional until further notice. Southern University and the Jaguar Nation asks for your continued prayers for Devon and the entire Gales family during this difficult time.
Georgia’s players and coaching staff took to social media to express their support and prayers for Gales:
