After hitting two home runs in his first two minor league games with the Mets’ Class-A Columbia Fireflies, Tim Tebow looked like the second coming of Ken Griffey Jr. Okay, not really, but it was an interesting stretch for the former Heisman Trophy winner.

Following that burst of power, Tebow fell into a slump that many expected from the 29-year-0ld who hadn’t played competitive baseball since 2005. On Sunday, however, Tebow ended his longball drought with his third home run of the year.

Tebow’s average had dropped to .220 heading into Sunday’s game and he was just 1 for 18 in his past six contests. While he may not be destined for Cooperstown, Tebow does share something in common with one of the greatest athletes in American history.

When Michael Jordan retired from basketball to pursue a career in baseball, he spent the 1994 season with the Double-A Birmingham Barons. In 127 games, Jordan recorded a .202 batting average with three home runs – the same number that Tebow managed to hit in 35 games.

Tebow is more physically inclined to hit the ball out of the park than Jordan was, which likely explains how he reached that number in about a fourth of the time.

Columbia would go on the lose the game 3-6, but it was a good day for Tebow, who finished 2-4 with a double, RBI and the home run. This baseball experiment might not go anywhere for Tebow, but it’s at least fun to watch.
