Video: UGA launching fundraiser to build house for paralyzed former Southern player Devon Gales
On Sept. 26, 2015, Southern University football player Devon Gales suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury during a game versus the Georgia Bulldogs.
The outpouring of love and support from the UGA community was immense. Gales was welcomed as if he were a member of the university. He attended Georgia games, received tremendous treatment, and was even given a new car.

A fundraiser was put in place to help built Gales and his family a new house. With his physical condition, his current home isn’t equipped to account for his challenges. As such, it’s estimated that the requisite changes will cost upwards of $500,000.
During Georgia’s basketball contest versus LSU on Saturday, the video displayed above was played for those in attendance during halftime. The ‘Build a Dawg House’ clip featured numerous members of the football team and coaching staff.
When interviewed, Gales had this to say:
“It would help me move around in my house a lot more. It would take a lot more off my parents, not needing so much assistance. I hope to play football again, even though my mom won’t let me. I’m going to try anyway. I also want a normal life. Have my own family and make the best out of it.”
Gales also admits he is progressing well — having some newfound movement in both his knee and hip.
