Nine players from the SEC were placed on the Walter Camp Award watch list on Friday, a 50-player compilation filled with previously named Davey O’Brien, Doak Walker and Bednarik Award nominees.
Alabama has a national high and conference-leading three selections — Landon Collins, Amari Cooper and T.J. Yeldon — followed by Georgia’s offense-defense pair Todd Gurley and Ramik Wilson. Other Walter Camp watch list players include South Carolina’s Mike Davis, Auburn’s Nick Marshall, Cody Prewitt from Ole Miss and Florida sophomore Vernon Hargreaves III.
Forty-two different programs are represented on the list. There are 33 offensive players —16 quarterbacks, 8 receivers, 7 running backs, and 2 offensive linemen — and 17 standouts from the defensive side of the ball — 7 defensive backs, 5 defensive lineman, and 5 linebackers.

The Walter Camp Player of the Year Award is given to the most outstanding player in college football and is the nation’s fourth oldest college football individual honor. The watch list will be trimmed to 10 semi-finalists in November.
Unofficially known as the mini-Heisman, the Walter Camp Award is often presented as a consolation prize to the game’s most prestigious award but there has been some overlap. The Heisman winner has also received the Walter Camp Award five times since 2000.
