Prior to Rutgers’ game against New Mexico this past Saturday, Athletic Director Patrick Hobbs made an appearance at a school-sponsored tailgate.

One student handed Hobbs a beer. After initially declining, he ultimately chugged the drink amidst a sea of cheers. The tailgate scene became a bit rowdy, and according to Hobbs, he took the drink in order to diffuse the situation and calm the atmosphere.

“My first concern is always for the safety and well-being of our students,” Hobbs told NJ.com. “Anyone who was at the (student tailgate) Saturday knows that I was acting to ensure that.”

Whether the incident had anything to do with it or not, Rutgers announced that it will no longer sponsor tailgating in ‘The Alley’ area.
