Texas A&M has several of the best traditions in college football, and one of them is the “Midnight Yell” event held each week on the night before each game.
Ryan Brauninger of TexAgs was on hand for the first Midnight Yell before the Aggies take on Texas State and shared the video below. The No. 12 Aggies are about a 33-point favorite against Texas State in Thursday’s opener, and it will be difficult for many observers to not look ahead to the Sept. 7 game at Clemson.
The university says the events are regularly attended by more than 25,000 people, and “Midnight Yell” is also held for every away game.
This tradition began regularly in 1931 when a group of cadets was gathered in Peanut Owens’ dorm room in Puryear Hall, when someone suggested that all of the freshmen should meet on the steps of the YMCA Building at midnight to practice yells.
A recent addition to “Midnight Yell” is called “First Yell.” The yell leaders started First Yell in 1999 as a way of welcoming all Aggies, including current and former students, back to campus to begin a new school year. First Yell happens on the weekend of the first home football game.
