Texas fans won’t remember Tom Herman’s debut fondly.
And before the end of Saturday’s game against Maryland at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, they let him know it.
Trailing 44-34 with 3:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Longhorns faithful began pelting the field with debris. According to reports, a majority of the items were cardboard fans. The game was briefly delayed until the playing surface was clear again.
But once play resumed, things only got worse for Texas, as Maryland scored yet another touchdown on its way to a 51-41 victory.
After his phenomenal success at Houston, expectations are high for Herman. He may end up turning the Longhorns around and lifting them back to elite status in the college football hierarchy. But Saturday’s result showed Texas still has a long way to go to reach that level.
And it might just take longer than Texas — and its fan base — had hoped.
