Wes Miller, the head basketball coach for Cincinnati, was raw and unfiltered Wednesday night following his team’s 54-49 defeat at the hands of Kansas State.

The Bearcats shot just 36.8% from the floor, missed 16 of their 18 attempts from 3-point range, and lost for the fourth time in 6 games. Cincy (17-13, 7-12 Big 12) led by as many as 8 points in the first but scored just 24 points over the game’s final 20 minutes to lose.

“It’s an unacceptable performance. The effort’s unacceptable, the fight’s unacceptable, it’s on the head coach. I did it. I’m the leader of the operation. I’ve got to do a better damn job. It’s on my ass. That’s the truth of it,” Miller told reporters after the game. “I’d boo our butts, too. I’d boo myself, too. God damn. That is unacceptable.

“… I don’t know what the heck that was today. To anybody that bought a damn ticket and had to watch that tonight, I apologize. You’re damn right you should be on my butt. That is unacceptable.”

Cincy was fighting for a spot in the NCAA Tournament but the latest loss will hurt. The Bearcats were already on the outside looking in for most bracketologists.

Wednesday’s 49-point game marked the third time since Jan. 7 the Bearcats have been held under 50 points. Prior to this year, the Bearcats had been held under 50 only twice since the start of the 2018-19 season.
