What Gus Malzahn said after Auburn’s win over Louisville in season opener
Gus Malzahn is feeling good about his football team after Auburn’s 31-24 win over Louisville today.
On the game and the win: “The atmosphere was unbelievable. It was like a home game. I really appreciate our fans coming out. It was a hard fought victory and we thought it would be. Louisville is a very good team and we got up and held on.”
Here are some other comments made by Malzahn on Auburn’s gameplay:
Malzahn: Defense played very good in the first half. Notes the INT and the fumble recovery TD

On Jeremy Johnson’s play: “I think he was trying to force a few things, just trying to make some plays early on. He’s going to be fine. He made some very good plays to help us win especially down the stretch.”
On not targeting Duke Williams very much: “A lot of our plays are reads. They were doubling some, but a lot of our plays are reads and they were leaving other people open.”
Gus on injuries: We do have some guys banged up. I don’t know the extent of all the injuries, but we do have some guys banged up.

On Peyton Barber: I’m very excited for Peyton. He’s worked extremely hard the last two years and this is his moment. He came through with flying colors. He ran the ball hard, great ball security. He really carried us in the second half.”
On the offensive line: “We were able to start running the football. I thought that was very important… We got a new right guard that’s playing. We rotated our left gaurds. We have some depth but we have got chance to have a very great offensive line. They just need a chance to play together more.”
On holding penalties: “We need to look at the tape. Obviously we had a touchdown called back. That was a big momentum play right there. We’ll just look at the film. The great thing is this is a team that will improve… We have to address our mistakes before the next game.”
