While his team pulled away late from Southern Miss for a 34-16 win, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen saw plenty of room for improvement from his team:

On the twists and turns of the game

“This had a bit of everything, right?” Mullen said. “It kind of had it all. It had onside kicks, it had a blocked punt, it had fumbled special team plays, goal line stands, big long runs and a kickoff return for a touchdown. You name it, it had it in this game.”

On the need for improvement

“We’ve got a lot work on before we compete in SEC games,” Mullen said. “We did a lot of good things and a lot of bad things.”

“Our guys responded and found a way to win the game,” Mullen said. “We made a lot of mistakes. I was disappointed with that stuff. Missed tackles on the defensive side of the ball. A lot of things that we have to get cleaned up.”

On the atmosphere in Hattiesburg

“It’s hard to win football games,” Mullen said. “We have a younger team. A lot of young guys got out there for their first opportunities.

“What a great environment this was here (in Hattiesburg). You can see that (Southern Mississippi) Coach (Todd) Monken is changing the program around. The culture. What they’re doing right here, that’s a pretty good football team. A much improved team from last year in every single facet. It was challenging.”
