South Carolina further solidified its footprint in Tennessee on Wednesday when Will Muschamp signed two of the state’s top 10 prospects.

Defensive end Joseph Anderson and athlete Keveon Mullins, who are both 4-stars per 247Sports.com’s composite ratings, are among the top five players in Will Muschamp’s 2019 recruiting class. After securing such highly rated players from Tennessee, Muschamp was asked how important it is for the Gamecocks to continue recruiting the nearby state, where he said football “is really improving.”

“We feel really good about the areas (we are) able to recruit,” he said. “Nashville is an easy flight to Charlotte, and it’s an hour drive, so for a family, that’s an easy drive to come see their son play. To me, you draw five hours around your campus and figure out where you can recruit the best.”

Muschamp also commended the job running backs coach Bobby Bentley has done in recruiting Nashville, a fast-growing area that he likened to Atlanta or Charlotte.

A current roster connection may have helped South Carolina land Anderson, who transferred from the school where 2018 Maxwell Iyama played. Muschamp said Anderson and Mullins played against each other in a state championship game this past season, so they likely knew each other during the recruitment process, too.

Muschamp has never lost to Tennessee during his seven years at Florida and South Carolina, and that likely won’t change if he continues plucking talented players out of the Volunteers’ home state.
