Will Muschamp shakes up South Carolina coaching staff, including play-calling

Changes are reportedly coming to the South Carolina staff as Will Muschamp looks to solve the offensive woes that plagued the team for much of the season.

Jeff Dillman, the director of strength and conditioning, is on his way out, according to Gamecock Pod, after 3 years in Columbia. The report also said that quarterbacks coach Dan Werner will not be retained for 2020. Bryan McClendon will no longer call plays for South Carolina, Josh Kendall of The Athletic also reported, along with the other changes.

Dillman was hired in December, 2015, after he spent one season as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Alabama. He was part of the staff that helped the Crimson Tide to the 2016 national championship.

Previously, he worked on Muschamp’s staff at Florida for 3 years as the director of strength and conditioning.

Werner was hired in January 2018. He previously spent one season as an offensive analyst at Alabama. He spent the previous 5 years as the co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Mississippi under head coach Hugh Freeze.

South Carolina’s offense dropped from 30.1 points per game in 2018 to 22.4 this season. In total yards per game, South Carolina had 372 yards per game this season, down from 426 last year.

Bryan McClendon will no longer call plays for South Carolina, a source told The Athletic. Strength coach Jeff Dillman has been fired, @gogamecocks reports. Dillman and QB coach Dan Werner fired, per @247Sports. All of this lines up with “changes” Muschamp talked about Saturday.
