Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott won’t play in the NFL’s first preseason game of the year Thursday night in the Hall of Fame Game against the Pittsburg Steelers.

Prescott has been dealing with a nagging shoulder injury since July 28 in which he strained a muscle in his throwing arm. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said last week that the team would give Prescott a few days off. Well, that has come and gone, and Prescott will now miss Thursday night’s preseason opener. McCarthy said the original plan was for Prescott to sit out the Hall of Fame Game; however, that is now a certainty due to his shoulder strain.

“After research and looking at it we just don’t want this to turn into something big,” McCarthy said, via ESPN. “So he’s doing everything that he possibly can but we’re just being a little bit more conservative with rehab.”

Per multiple reporters, the team has taken a step back to evaluate Prescott’s injury and take a conservative approach to ensure Prescott’s injury doesn’t develop into a bigger issue costing him more time. Prescott won’t throw until next week at this point.

McCarthy said the plan is still for Prescott to play in the preseason; however, that depends on this injury.
