Brian Schottenheimer could soon be head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, according to a report.
Pro Football Talk and others have picked up a report from Clarence Hill of All City DLLS that the Cowboys are closing in on naming Schottenheimer the new head coach, likely by Friday. Jane Slater shares that the offensive coordinator’s 2nd interview for the HC job lasted more than 5 hours. Josina Anderson also reported that the Cowboys appear to be wrapping up their search.
Schottenheimer, 51, is the son of the late Marty Schottenheimer, a multi-decade NFL head coach. Brian Schottenheimer has SEC roots.
Schottenheimer transferred to the University of Florida from Kansas. He sat out the 1993 season and then played for Steve Spurrier’s Gators from 1994-96, collecting a national championship ring.
Having served as a backup to Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy winner, Schottenheimer got into coaching after graduating. Despite not playing professional football, Schottenheimer began his coaching career at the NFL level with the St. Louis Rams in 1997.
Schottenheimer has spent most of his coaching career at the professional level. He has had 3 coaching stops at the college level, including 1 in the SEC. Schottenheimer joined the Georgia staff as offensive coordinator in 2015, Mark Richt’s final season before UGA hired Kirby Smart.
After the brief stop in Athens, it was back to the NFL for Schottenheimer. He was on staff with the Indianapolis Colts (QB coach, 2016-17), Seattle Seahawks (offensive coordinator, 2018-20) and Jacksonville Jaguars (passing game coordinator, 2021), before joining the Cowboys in 2022.
Schottenheimer was first brought in as a coaching analyst in 2022. He took over as offensive coordinator, but former head coach Mike McCarthy handled play-calling.
The Cowboys parted with McCarthy on Jan. 14 after his contract expired. The team has also interviewed Leslie Frazier, Robert Saleh and Kellen Moore. Deion Sanders spoke to Jerry Jones about the opening, but has not interviewed for the position.
