Darius Slay is heading to the other side of Pennsylvania after winning the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles, as the veteran free agent cornerback and former Mississippi State star reached an agreement on a 1-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers that’s worth $10 million and fully guaranteed.
Slay’s agents told ESPN’s Adam Schefter of the agreement on Wednesday, as the Steelers added a strong piece to their secondary on the first day of free agency. The deal for Slay was negotiated by Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey, according to Schefter.
The Steelers signed a proven playmaker in Slay, adding him to their defensive backfield with 2023 second-round pick Joey Porter Jr. Pittsburgh’s secondary also includes Pro Bowl safety and former Alabama star Minkah Fitzpatrick and run-stuffing safety DeShon Elliott.
The Eagles released Slay with a post-June 1 designation to create $4.3 million in additional salary cap room.
The 34-year-old Slay played the past 5 seasons with Philadelphia and put together one of the better stints at cornerback in Eagles history. Slay served as a captain multiple times and appeared in 14 games last season, finishing with 13 passes defended, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and 49 tackles. He capped off his time in Philly by leading the Eagles to their second Super Bowl title last month.
Slay began his career with the Detroit Lions, who selected him in the second round of the 2013 draft. He has been named to the Pro Bowl 6 times — 3 with the Lions and 3 with the Eagles.
