If anyone watched the debut of Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields against the Cleveland Browns, you saw that Fields had a rough go of it. Fields was sacked by the Browns 9 times Sunday, which was almost an NFL record. A record which was set by former Alabama and New York Jets quarterback Greg McElroy in his first game as a rookie.

When he was with the Jets, McElroy was sacked 11 times and hit 35 times. He recalled that game with Cole Cubelic on their morning show “McElroy and Cubelic In the Morning” on WJOX radio out of Birmingham, Alabama.

“I got hit 35, I don’t remember much of the second half,” he said. “According to Rex Ryan (then head coach of the Jets), it was one of the worse offensive line performances he’d ever seen.”

“If I had played as bad as Justin Fields, I’d have been out of the league immediately.”

McElroy also went on to discuss the play of Fields saying “he is who we thought he was,” saying that Fields holds on to the ball too long, which in his eyes may explain why he had gotten sacked often Sunday.
