KFC gave a fellow Sanders a little lift on Saturday night.

After former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders’s extra-long wait to hear his name called last weekend at the NFL Draft in Green Bay, the fast-food chain wanted to give Sanders an extra-large order of encouragement. Sanders was thought of by most as a first-round talent but somehow slipped not just past the first round but past the second, third and fourth rounds, all the way to the fifth round, where he was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the 144th overall pick.

Sanders had to wait 2 days, until Saturday afternoon, to hear his name called. But KFC, with its founder Colonel Sanders, who launched the fast-food chain in 1930, had some encouraging words for a quarterback set to launch his NFL career almost 100 years later.

“The Colonel was rejected 1,009 times before finally landing our famous original recipe. Sometimes all a Sanders needs is a little to cook. Congrats Shedeur!” wrote KFC on its social media post on Saturday night.

KFC was responding to Shedeur Sanders’s own social media post on Saturday afternoon after he was drafted that read: “Thank you GOD”.

The quarterback danced around in joy and relief after finally getting the call from Cleveland, and that night an American institution with the “Sanders” name wanted to give a possible future NFL star some words to live by.
